Elans are an exceptionally rare kind of near-human psionic aberration created through a special ritual.[1][3][4]
Description
The elans resemble the human vessels from whom they are derived, and retain much of the variety in personalities and appearance of their human forebears.[1]
Elans are typically just under 6 ft (1.8 m) tall and weigh around 180 lb (82,000 g), with males being taller and heavier than females. Their appearance varies widely, like humans, but physical traits may favor pale skin, red hair, and a youthful look. Elans dress to blend in with local human styles, often incorporating unique hairstyles, fanciful clothing, tattoos, and body piercings.[1][2]
Personality
Elans often go mad, and some believe they hear the voices of the spirit trapped within them.[4]
Abilities
Elan can potentially live for many centuries.[1][4]
Elans are naturally psionic and have several supernatural abilities stemming from their nature. They do not sleep, instead trancing for 4 hours each night to replenish their psionic powers. They can temporarily protect themselves from harm, or reduce the damage of an attack.[1]
An elan can sustain itself purely on its own psionic power, and would not need to eat for a day after it uses this power.[1]
Society
Elans are often integrated into the surrounding human society.[1] As with all residents of Riedra, elans are indoctrinated into the Path of Inspiration and believe their noble actions can redeem the evil spirits bound within them. Most elans in Riedra join the Harmonious Shield, and many belong to the Edgewalkers.[4]
Those who learn the truth or reject their lot in life have been known to flee to Adar, where they are treated with suspicion but may prove to be powerful opponents to the might of Riedra.[4]
Creation
The elans represent a dark side of the process of Inspiration that allows a quori to posses a willing empty vessel. Elans contain a quori spirit condemned to reside powerless within a human form by its kin for crimes against the quori.[3]
This process is not voluntary, and it often ends with the vessel eventually falling to madness over its long life.[4]
Lands
Elans hold no land, but primarily reside in Riedra. Besides Riedra, Elans have been known to flee to Adar as well as the continents of Khorvaire, Xen'drik, or Argonnessen.[4]
Notable Elans
- Murephan, Summit Road Guide, he is formerly one of the Chosen of Riedra, and now an amnesiac elan ranger and psion who has abandoned the Path of Inspiration for Adar. Along with his dromite companion Kelki, Murephan travels Syrkarn, where he works against the hated Inspired and begrudgingly aids travelers.[5]
- The nameless druid of the Shanjueed Jungle, this elan druid and telepath dwells deep within the jungle amid the growing Mabar manifest zone with her horrid ape companion. The Edgewalkers who maintain the wild reserve surrounding it have clashed with her in the past.[6]
